ADOT is reporting a crash that has closed Interstate 40 Westbound about 10 miles southwest of Kingman at Milepost 36. The closure is near Griffith Road, but drivers should exit no later than Oatman Highway (Exit 44) to avoid getting stuck in the backup.
Air Evac is on scene of the accident.
Alternate routes towards the California state line include taking US 93 in Kingman, followed by state routes 68 and 95.
There is no estimated time to reopen westbound lanes. Eastbound lanes are unaffected.
We understand there have been 4 fatalities.
11:55 AM – Interstate 40 westbound has partially reopened about 10 miles southwest of Kingman at milepost 36. Drivers should expect delays while crews continue cleanup after the earlier crash.
UPDATE: We can now confirm 5 people have died in this wrong-way crash. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle is being identified as an 82-year-old male of Nevada. He died at a local hospital. The westbound lanes have all been re-opened.
